Treatments that can be covered

Treatments Your Super May Help Pay For

The ATO can release some of your super early to pay for medical treatment when strict conditions are met. Below are the treatments we most often help with, what the ATO looks for, and what you’ll need, so you know where you stand before you apply.

1. An Eligible Medical Reason

The treatment must treat a life-threatening illness or injury, or relieve acute or chronic pain, or an acute or chronic mental illness.

2. Not Readily Available Publicly

The treatment must not be readily available to you through the public health system.

3. Two Medical Reports

One from a registered specialist in the relevant area (a psychiatrist for mental illness), and one from another registered medical practitioner.

4. An Itemised Quote

A quote or invoice showing the cost and a description of each part of the treatment.

5. No Other Way To Pay

You can’t pay some or all of the cost without your super. The ATO treats super as a last resort, and may ask for evidence such as bank statements.

The Super for Health way

Ethical By Design, So Your Application Stands Up

Applications that cut corners get delayed, rejected or reviewed later. Every application we support follows the same protocol.

An Honest Eligibility Check

We assess your treatment against the ATO’s conditions first, and tell you if we don’t think it qualifies.

Your Own Practitioners

Reports come from registered practitioners who have personally assessed you. The clinical opinion is always theirs, never ours.

Registered Tax Agent Oversight

Every application is managed under the supervision of a registered Tax Agent.

PROTECT Checks Before Lodging

Our PROTECT platform checks reports, quotes and consents for completeness before anything goes to the ATO.

Your Choice, No Pressure

You choose your treating practitioner. No inducements, and no pressure to go ahead.

Your Privacy Respected

We collect only what the application needs and delete patient records 30 days after approval.

Super for Health is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). The ATO decides every application, and approval is not guaranteed. The amount released is based on your itemised quote or invoice.

Super released on compassionate grounds is paid and taxed as a normal super lump sum, must be included in your tax return, and may affect government benefits and insurance held through your super fund. This page is general information only and is not medical, financial or tax advice. Consider your circumstances and speak with your super fund or a licensed adviser.

It is illegal to access super early unless you meet a condition of release. False or misleading statements in an application can attract penalties.

Treatment examples are illustrative. Eligibility depends on your medical circumstances and supporting reports, not on the type of treatment alone.
