Specialist & other medical treatment
Specialist Surgery and Other Medical Treatment
When you’re living with pain or a serious illness, waiting months or years on a public list can make things worse. Many treatments can qualify if they meet the ATO’s conditions, including treatment for a partner or dependant.
Good to know
Talk to us before you book or pay. Your specialist’s report needs to explain why the treatment isn’t readily available to you through the public health system.
May Be Eligible When
- The treatment relieves acute or chronic pain, or treats a life-threatening illness or injury
- It isn’t readily available to you through the public health system
- For treatment overseas: your reports explain why it can’t be done in Australia
What You’ll Need
- A report from your treating specialist
- A report from your GP or another registered medical practitioner
- An itemised quote covering every part of the treatment (for surgery: surgeon, anaesthetist, assistant and hospital)
- For a dependant: evidence of the relationship
How we protect your application: a Case Manager reviews your situation first and tells you plainly whether it’s likely to meet the conditions. We then check every fee on the quote is part of the treatment, and that the specialist matches the treatment area.

Super for Health is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). The ATO decides every application, and approval is not guaranteed. The amount released is based on your itemised quote or invoice.
Super released on compassionate grounds is paid and taxed as a normal super lump sum, must be included in your tax return, and may affect government benefits and insurance held through your super fund. This page is general information only and is not medical, financial or tax advice. Consider your circumstances and speak with your super fund or a licensed adviser.
It is illegal to access super early unless you meet a condition of release. False or misleading statements in an application can attract penalties.
Treatment examples are illustrative. Eligibility depends on your medical circumstances and supporting reports, not on the type of treatment alone.
